This week I drive out to the suburbs to meet with the Mayor of Coquitlam – Richard Stewart.
As many of my clients have been moving to Coquitlam in recent years, I was particularly excited for this interview. Mayor Stewart’s passion for his city clearly shows in this interview and this passion is one of the reasons why he is so well liked by the majority of Coquitlam residents.
Richard has lived in Coquitlam his whole life where he has been a vital part of his community for many years. Richard served as the provincial MLA for Coquitlam-Maillardvile, he was a city councillor and in 2008 he was elected mayor of Coquitlam.
He has an extensive volunteer history in the city as well, working with a large number of social, service, environmental, business and community organizations, including the Coquitlam Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Maillardville Lions Club, the Société Maillardville Uni and Société Francophone de Maillardville.
In our interview, Richard and I discuss what the City of Coquitlam is doing to address housing issues facing the Lower Mainland. We talk about new housing developments in the area and get into how the new Evergreen transit line is affecting the city. Lastly, we touch on the complexities of mental health issues and his opinion on re-opening Riverview as a drug treatment centre.
Be sure to follow Richard Stewart on Twitter so you can stay up to date on all of the new innovation happening in the diverse city of Coquitlam.
